Making Reading a 15 Minute Routine

Making Reading a 15 Minute Routine
The teacher invites students to read along together with a big book during the 15 minute reading activity before lessons begin.

JAYAWIJAYA, PAPUA –  Since the training and mentoring in using the leveled reading books, partner schools in Jayawijaya have implemented a program where everyone reads for 15 minutes in the morning. One of these schools is SD YPPK Wouma where Meriana, a grade I teacher, uses big books to read stories, while the students listen and read along with her. Students are sometimes asked to guess what the pictures are about and are asked to summarize the whole story for their classmates. As part of this, they are asked about the characters in the story, the background of the story's events, and the plot. Guided by these questions, students can summarize the contents of the book very well. (Grn)
