Learning about Talkshows in Indonesian Language

WAJO, SOUTH SULAWESI – I designed material about interviews for an Indonesian language class for grade VIII by replicating the model of a talkshow. The purpose of this lesson was to help students learn about interviewing a guest while paying attention to the ethics of interviewing.

I split the class into four groups, with each group consisting of the the same number of students. Each group had a different role. For example, the first group acted as the interviewer. Group 2 served as a member of a rescue team. Group 3 was the crew of the ship Marina Baru, and the fourth group represented the victims' families.

Once the groups were formed, students were invited to watch a talkshow video on Youtube. They observed and identified the characteristics of talkshows, such as the attitude of the interviewer, body language and the kinds of questions asked, and how the guests answered questions. The goal was for students to know how a talkshow is conducted professionally.

Then each group presented results of their discussions in front of the class while the others gave them their responses. The teacher then summarized the results and this was then turned into a tool to evaluate the quality of talkshows that the students practiced.

To help the students understand the topic of the interview to be held, each group receives reading materials on the topic 'The sinking of the Marina Baru'. They were given the opportunity to read silently for several minutes, and discuss the text in their respective groups so that they understood the content well.

The focus of the group I discussion (the interviewer) was compiling a list of questions to the guest group. They also predicted possible answers and responses to the answers. Likewise, groups 2, 3, and 4 discussed what questions the interviewer might ask and the possible answers they would give. They also prepared gestures appropriate to the questions.

After the discussion, the students staged a talk show consisting of four people with one representing as the interviewer, and three acting as the talkshow guests (each group was represented by one person). Taking it in turns, for 15 minutes each group presented a talkshow in which they practiced the interview process.

The talkshow was noisy and fun. Everyone made a good attempt at showing their ability. "How could the Marina Baru sink at sea when the weather was good?" asked the interviewer of the vessel's crew members.

"We had been carrying out maintenance on the ship according to the proper procedures. The ship was actually in good condition. We also did not know why suddenly there was a leak in the hull causing the ship sink,” said a crew member from the Marina Baru. Thus went the talk show that the students staged. Members of the group, who were not involved in performing, gave an assessment to the group that was performing based on the agreed terms of reference for the talkshow.

After the talkshow, the interviewer and the guest summarized what had been said. The result was presented before the class, and displayed on the classroom wall. The students were happy and participated actively in the lesson. They were able to find and process information through reading, they were capable of expressing their ideas orally (in the interviews) and in writing (in the summaries). In addition, the students also learnt about the importance of ethics and politeness in speaking according to context.
