BANDUNG, WEST JAVA – Tatat Hartati PhD, lecturer in the Department for the Training of Primary School Teachers at the Indonesian University of Education (UPI), has developed a study entitled: "Optimizing school-based management (SBM) to set up a literacy class and develop the literacy of primary school students." The study was conducted at SDN 3.4 Sukarasa Bandung.
Tatat and Dwi Heryanto, her colleague at UPI, chose a model of research and development using a modified of 4D approach (define, design, develop, disseminate): where define refers to the
information gathering stage with literature studies and field studies; design refers to stage where an draft program is designed; develop refers to the stage where the literacy class is developed; and disseminate refers to the stage where the design of the literacy class is disseminated.
The research, funded by the Ministry of Research and Technology and Higher Education, has produced designs for literacy classes and multi-media teaching of literacy, including design optimization of SBM and teachers in order for the class to be successful. "The literacy class is a classroom environment that supports the improvement of students' skills in reading, writing, and being creative. We have developed a class design that can optimize the literacy skills of students," Tatat went on to say.
The design of the literacy class, according to Tatat, should provide for a variety of student learning needs. She mapped out the layout of the classroom as in the illustration above. The students' seating is arranged in a U-shape as the center of learning. A reading corner is also provided, along with a reading area, writing corner, and a corner for the other subjects studied by the primary school students. Meanwhile, boards for displaying students' work are placed in three corners of the room.
Once applied, the results of this study indicated that the literacy class significantly influences learning outcomes. "From the test results, the difference between the average pre-test and post-test scores shows the ability of experimental class, which was designed as a class for literacy and multi-literacy teaching and learning, were better than the scores of the control class which was left as it was. SBM, along with the support of parents, both have an important role in developing a literacy class and the success of the teaching and learning processes," she added. (Anw)
