JAKARTA – MORA's plan to reform Islamic Teacher Teaching Institutions (TTIs) will build on the experience of the USAID PRIORITAS program which has been conducted with 17 TTIs, including seven Islamic TTIs. These are UIN Ar-Raniry Aceh, IAIN North Sumatra, UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, UIN Walisongo Semarang, UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, and UIN Alaudin Makassar.
According to Ajar Budi Kuncoro, USAID PRIORITAS Senior Manager for the Coordination of Higher Education, MORA's plan to improve the quality of TTIs will support the dissemination of good practices in preparing prospective teachers.
"We have developed several programs to support the improvement of the quality of pre-service teacher education, including getting TTIs and schools/madrasah to work together, training TTI lecturers to improve the quality of their lectures on teaching and learning and school-based management, to make the lectures relevant to the learning and management needs in schools," said Budi in his presentation to 38 Deans of Islamic TTI Education Faculties from around Indonesia as part of discussions in Bogor to provide input for the drafting of an Islamic TTI reform plan (22/6).
He added that USAID PRIORITAS has also implemented programs to improve the quality of the teachers professional education program (PPG) and teacher practicums (PPL), as well as implementing a class action research program for teachers and lecturers to improve the quality of learning in the classroom. After the presentation, the participants held discussions in small groups to identify those USAID PRIORITAS programs that are relevant and can be adapted in order to reform the TTIs. During the presentation session, they reaffirmed that USAID PRIORITAS programs are very suitable for application in Islamic TTIs.
According to one of the participants, the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Teacher Training (FTK) at IAIN Pontianak, Dr Lailial Muhlifah, the development of the lab madrasah or the TTI partner madrasah is needed to support the training of new teachers. "We need to provide a good experience for student teachers currently doing their teaching practices in lab madrasah or partner madrasah. We need to prepare these lab madrasah well to receive the student teachers," he said. (Anw)
