TANGERANG, BANTEN – Akidin MPd, a math teacher at MTsN Tigaraksa, invited his Grade IX students to makes scale models of their madrasah in order to apply the concept of similarity in problem solving. The students were divided into four groups each numbering 8-9 students. Then, each group was given a worksheet that contained a guide to making a miniature version of the buildings of MTsN Tigaraksa, and a meter rule for measuring.
"You are going do a project in which you have to construct a scale model of our school. This task will be worked on over four lessons. Today you will measure the size of the madrasah which will be the basis for making the model," said Akidin to his students.
During the process of taking measurements, the students divide up the areas of the school, with some measuring parts of the building, others the grounds, the front yard, and the entire school area. All of the students seemed to enjoy the measuring activities. After completing it, each group presented their data, and each group's measurements were compared the work of the others.
At the second lesson, Akidin assigned the students the task of creating a scale picture of the madrasah. "Once you know its size, every student will apply the concept of similarity in order to draw the madrasah in miniature. We will use a scale of 1:100," said Akidin.
After this scale picture was completed, the students made a 3dimensional model of the madrasah during the third and fourth lessons. Each group had been asked to obtain or buy the necessary equipment and materials, such as plywood, carpet, glue, scissors, matchstick-sized pieces of wood, and card with a thickness of 3 mm. Using the pictures and the measurements that they had made, the students worked together on the task of making the scaled version of the madrasah. Some students measured paper, others cut it, and others pasted it onto the plywood that had a layer of carpet laid over it.
"During this lesson, students practiced the concepts of similarity, comparative values, taking measurements, and the geometry of ?at surfaces," said Akidin. When they had ?nished making the scale models of madrasah, the groups took turns present their models to the class. (Anw/Anl).
